Breakfast Songs

October is national breakfast month, which reminds us not only of our love for cereal and donuts, but that there are some legitimately excellent songs written about this most important meal of the day.

"Breakfast at Tiffany’s": Admittedly, this 1995 Deep Blue Something song isn’t about eating eggs and bacon so much as it’s about relationship troubles and the iconic Audrey Hepburn film. However, the protagonist and the person he’s singing to seem to bond over the movie, which leads one to believe that they likely woke up together on several occasions and exchanged niceties over coffee and croissants.

"Black Coffee in Bed": This 1982 Squeeze jam about a post-breakup rebound ends with the protagonist singing about “lips without passion” and “black coffee in bed.” One can assume that means the previous evening’s events went either very well, or very poorly, or a little of both. FYI: That’s Elvis Costello singing backup on this song.

"Breakfast in America": This 1979 Supertramp single, (off an album of the same name), mentions eating “kipper for breakfast” and has a hook so catchy that Gym Class Heroes sampled it in their 2007 song “Cupid’s Chokehold.”

"Banana Pancakes": Jack Johnson’s 2005 ode to one of the best breakfast foods of all time – the banana pancake – includes the sweet proposal that “Maybe we can sleep in / I'll make you banana pancakes / Pretend like it's the weekend now.” A cute guy who wants to make you a delicious breakfast and hang out in bed all day? We wouldn’t say no.

"Don’t You Forget About Me": Okay, obviously, this song has nothing to do with omelettes, French toast, hashbrowns, or the like, but it is cemented in popular culture as the theme song to The Breakfast Club. That, in addition to the image of Judd Nelson triumphantly raising his fist at the end of the 1985 classic that is burned into our collective consciousness, is reason enough to include it here.
