See Tour DatesNew Green Day Album On the Way Soon
Pop punkers Green Day have reported that its begun recording demos in Europe for its follow-up to last year’s 21st Century Breakdown. While the last album just came out in May 2009, the band has noted that it wants to release this album quicker than the last. Front man Billie Joe Armstrong told Kerrang! magazine that it began working on the album to get it out fast than the last because it took five years to record the follow up to American Idiot.
So where has the band been recording? It’s currently touring around Europe at the moment and have been recording around the continent this spring. Says Armstrong, “We did some demos in Berlin, some in Stockholm, some just outside of Glasgow and some in Amsterdam. We wanted to get [the new songs] down in some early form."
This will be Green Day’s ninth (!) album since its debut 1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours, released in 1990. Its most recent album pulled out a Best Rock Album Grammy this past January and remained at the top of the charts for several weeks around the globe. At this point in the band’s career, it can seemingly do no wrong. The experimental epic that was American Idiot, also a Grammy Winner for Best Rock Album in 2005, is one of the best selling albums in the genre and reintroduced the band as a viable songwriting force after a couple weaker albums like Warning and Nimrod.
While critical listeners may still hear 2-3 songs being forced into one song on some of the 8+ minute songs that the band has released in recent years, it’s undeniable that this move has energized the band’s creativity. In some ways it makes sense, I mean you can only play the same style of 4 chord punk tunes for so long until you’ve exhausted it.
Also pending future release is the Green Day version of Rock Band, which is slated for June 8th. It will feature 47 Green Day songs upon release, and players will be able to unlock rare archive tunes and more.
The band will be in Europe through July on tour, so if you’re hoping for a European jaunt this summer, check out the band at one of the following dates:
