Amy’s Greatest Collaborators

By 15

Amy Winehouse is an icon and an artist who is very sorely missed. Although Winehouse’s rise to the top was fraught with issues, there’s no denying that she was one of the best female singers of an era. (In August of 2011, Winehouse’s Back to Black became the U.K.’s best selling album of the 21st century). Of course, she didn’t make it to the top on her own. These are some of Amy’s most notable collaborators. Mark Ronson: The well-known producer and DJ co-produced Winehouse’s breakthrough album Back to Black and also gave songs including “You Know I’m No Good” and “Rehab” their first major exposure when he played them on his New York City-based radio show East Village Radio. Ronson won the 2008 Grammy for Producer of the Year for Back to Black. He also shared the awards for Best Pop Vocal Album and Record of the Year with Winehouse, who sang on the song “Valerie” from his 2007 album Version. Dionne Bromfield: Winehouse’s 15 year old goddaughter was the first artist signed to the singer’s Lioness Records label. The teenager’s debut album, Introducing Dionne Bromfield, was released in 2009 and features Winehouse doing backing vocals on several tracks. Winehouse’s last public appearance before her death occurred on July 20, 2011, when she appeared onstage with Bromfield at London’s Roundhouse Theatre. The Dap-Kings: Winehouse hired Sharon Jones’ longtime backing band The Dap Kings, (who serve as the house band for the Daptone Records label), to sing backup for her when she shifted from the jazz sound of her debut album Frank to the 60’s soul-and girl group-inspired Back to Black. Six of the album's eleven tracks, including the hits "Rehab" and "You Know I'm No Good,” feature various members of The Dap-Kings. The group also sang backup for Winehouse on her U.S. tour. Tony Bennett: Winehouse and the legendary jazz vocalist recorded a song together for Bennett’s album Duets II, which will be released on Sept. 20. The proceeds from the single, “Body and Soul,” will go to a charity set up in Winehouse’s name.
