Rock Star Hobbies

David Lovering, Pixies Drummer and Performing Magician

Pixies drummer by night, The Scientific Phenomenalist by day, David Lovering defies preconceived notions of rock stardom. While at times his performances are more scientific than magical, more comedic than awe-inspiring, Lovering knows how to intrigue and humor audiences. He does extraordinary tricks with simple props, which range from smoke and pickles to a chair and Jack in the Box antenna ball. In any case, it’s nice to see a drummer finally getting the spotlight for a change. Roger Daltrey, The Who Singer and Trout Farmer Many know that The Who frontman was in such films as Tommy and The Kids Are Alright – but Underwater World of Trout, Vol. 1? Yes, that’s right – when charismatic rock god Roger Daltrey isn’t selling out stadiums on tour, he likes to relax by doing a bit of trout farming. He even designed and built his very own trout farm, Lakedown Trout Fishery, in England about 30 years ago (which can be seen on Underwater World of Trout, Vol. 1). "When I go fishing," Daltrey claims, "I come away feeling like I've smoked half a dozen joints." Well, that’s enough to inspire any young trout farming enthusiast. Bill Wyman, Rolling Stone Bassist and Treasure Hunter Roger Daltrey’s hobby isn’t the only documentary star – ex-Rolling Stone Bill Wyman was in a short video, too: one about metal detecting. "Metal detecting is not just for anoraks or eccentrics; it's probably the best and most enjoyable way of learning about our history," he declares on his site. Wyman even has his own signature metal detector - so that’s where Keith Richards gets all of his jewelry. Maynard James Keenan, Tool Vocalist and Winemaker When Maynard James Keenan moved from Los Angeles to Jerome, Arizona, he not only found a lower-key lifestyle, but also fertile ground for his newfound hobby: winemaking. You might think this strange, but wine is in the man’s blood – not from the party last night, but years ago when his great-grandparents made wine somewhere in pre-World War II northern Italy. So naturally, Keenan opened a winery and vineyards and went to town. It’s even said that Puscifer’s latest release, "The Conditions of My Parole," was recorded in part among barrels at Keenan’s winery.

Weezer to Play All Of Pinkerton On Upcoming Tour?

By 6

Weezer recently announced yet another album, entitled Hurley after revealing its album cover, which depicts the actor who played Hurley on Lost. While some older fans may not be jumping to pre-order this album yet (did you hear the single? My God…), they may be interested to hear that the band may be trekking out later this year to pay its respects to what some consider the last great Weezer album. The 1996 cult classic Pinkerton was an album that many hold near and dear to their hearts. It will be given the reissue treatment on October 5th, and a recent interview with guitarist Brian Bell leads one to believe their may be a tour dedicated to this momentous event. At last week’s Mile High Festival, Bell told an interviewer that the reissue will include new packaging and possibly a tour. “(It will include) I’m praying — a Pinkerton tour, where we’ll play all the songs off Pinkerton, soon.” The possibility of that seems crazy to most fans, like me, as it’s well-known that lead man Rivers Cuomo is not a fan of breaking out tunes from that album live very often. While “Tired of Sex” and sometimes “El Scorcho” or the other single “The Good Life” are sometimes played, most of the albums’ gems are left to collect dust. This of is supposedly based on how Cuomo took the critics tearing apart the album and a number of issues that I’m sure we’ll never really get the whole story on, but was enough to put the band on hiatus until 2001’s Green Album. The thought of Weezer actually doing a tour based on playing the album from front to back would definitely push some older fans into buying tickets. What do you think? Would you go to the show if Pinkerton was going to be played, or are you just tired of the whole Weezer story at this point? The whole interview below:

Primus Returns With Tour and New Album In the Works

By 6

Eternally odd trio Primus are returning this year with another reunion tour and an album that will be recorded later this year with a 2011 release date. Bassist and leader Les Claypool and his two band mates, guitarist Larry “Ler” LeLonde, and drummer Jay Lane, will hit the road this summer. It was announced in a particularly heady location online, The Dead’s Phil Lesh’s personal message board, where he mentioned that Lane was leaving the band Further to rejoin Primus for a tour. And thus the Primus cheese-heads lost their minds… LeLonde had been recently killing time playing for System of a Down vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Serj Tankian. Of course, not to be outdone, ex-Primus drummer Tim Armstrong has been touring with Tool’s Maynard Keenan’s new project Puscifer. So many people helping people in music nowadays. Anyways, the band will do a short tour this summer, and then will be heading into the studio after the tour to record their first full-length album since 1999. Openers for the tour are Gogol Bordello for most dates, though Wolfmother is expected to open the Vegas show. One thing is for sure; this summer just became a lot more awesome with Primus on the road. Here come the bastards… Here they come… The dates for this jaunt are: 07/27 – Toronto, ON @ Sound Academy 07/29 – Essex Jct., VT @ Midway Lawn at Champlain Valley Expo 07/30 – Brooklyn, NY @ Williamsburg Waterfront 07/31 – Bridgeport, CT @ Gathering of the Vibes Festival 08/01 – Charlotesville, VA @ Charlottesville Pavilion 08/03 – Cleveland, OH @ Time Warner Cable Ampitheater 08/05 – Columbus, OH @ LC Pavilion 08/06 – Nashville, TN @ Ryman Auditorium 08/07 – Milwaukee, WI @ The Rave 08/09 – Council Bluffs, IA @ Stir Cove at Harrah’s 08/10 – Kansas City, MO @ Uptown Theater 08/12 – Denver, CO @ Red Rocks 08/13 – Salt Lake City, UT @ The Rail 08/14 – Las Vegas, NV @ The Joint (An Evening with Primus – Special midnight show) 08/15 – Santa Barbara, CA @ County Bowl 09/18 – Tempe, AZ @ Arizona Fall Frenzy
