Between the Covers

Bruce Springsteen and Jimmy Fallon (as Neil Young) Cover LMFAO’s “Sexy And I Know It” Click here to listen!

As a viral-destined finale to Bruce Springsteen Week on “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon” last month, The Boss and Jimmy Fallon did a hilarious cover of the LMFAO hit “Sexy And I Know It.” While Fallon did his surprisingly spot-on Neil Young impression during the song, busting out a harmonica, acoustic guitar and cowboy hat, Bruce Springsteen did his own impersonation – of himself. In a cut-off jean jacket, aviators and a red forehead bandana, Springsteen sang “Girl I got that body / I work out” with his straightest face and lowest voice, flexing his biceps to prove the lyrics true, even after 62 years. As the cover followed the unlikely duo’s 2010 performance of Willow Smith’s “Whip My Hair,” hopefully they’ll give more modern hits the classic rock treatment soon.

Ben l’Oncle Covers The White Stripes’ “Seven Nation Army” Since covers come after the original song is recorded, you’d expect remixes to have a more modern flare . But sometimes they rewind the sound a little back in time, like French soul singer Ben l’Oncle’s rendition of The White Stripes “Seven Nation Army.” Jack and Meg White’s minimalist guitar and drums are expanded into an upbeat orchestra of muted horns, rich vocals and screaming organ solo, leaving the telltale bass line (which is actually Jack White’s Kay Hollowbody guitar run through a DigiTech Whammy pedal set down an octave). Although rock fans are usually quite protective when it comes to preserving the dignity of an original classic like this one, crossovers into unexpected territory do stretch the songs into intriguing forms, giving them a new life – or at least new YouTube comments. Nevertheless, the Grammy-winning, chart-topping song has made quite the journey since Jack first named it after a misheard pronunciation of “Salvation Army” when he was little.

RAC Covers The Smashing Pumpkins’ “1979” Remix Artist Collective (RAC) continues to build its remix empire (which includes The Shins, Kings of Leon, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Edward Sharpe) with this ‘90s alt-rock cover of The Smashing Pumpkins. Sung by RAC founder André Allen Anjos’ wife Liz Anjos, the song turns Billy Corgan’s characteristically coarse vocals into silky female melodies that glide over ethereal electricity. More synth than guitar-driven, this bubbly electronic remix emphasizes the more kinetic side of apathy in the lyrics “We don't even care as restless as we are…The street heats the urgency of now / As you see there's no one around.”

Songwriters in Their Own "Write"

By 13

Some lyrics are like poetry. But when songwriters tire of writing songs, they often turn to genuine poetry, novels, plays and other more concrete forms of literature to express what they cannot with a backing band. Stripping away all the fabric of music, audiences are left with simple yet intimate black and white musings on life, death and everything in between. From erotica to children’s books, here are some singers who have put down the mic and picked up the pen. John Lennon Lennon was indeed a “Paperback Writer.” He wrote a collection of poems and short stories called In His Own Write. The book is illustrated with Lennon's original art from the height of Beatlemania in 1964 and contains clever puns and turns of phrases filled with sarcasm and wit expected from the British Beatle, including an “About the Awful” section in place of “About the Author.” Jim Morrison The Lizard King’s extreme, erotic and enigmatic persona oozes out of his poetry and prose just as it does in his lyrics. His writings offer a brighter spotlight and deeper exploration of themes merely grazed in The Doors’ popular songs: sex, drugs, fame and the beautiful tragedies that come with them. While the books are more surrealist than Shakespeare, The Lords and the New Creatures, The American Night and Wilderness still explore society's dark side with sensual yet seething images and ideas. While they might not make very much sense at first, Morrison explains in Wilderness that they don’t need to: “Listen, real poetry doesn't say anything, it just ticks off the possibilities. Opens all doors. You can walk through any one that suits you.” Billy Corgan The lead singer and lyricist of Smashing Pumpkins puts the same bold, frantic passion of his songs into his poetry in Blinking with Fists. No stranger to spoken-word performances, Corgan’s intense yet sincere energy comes through in poems like “The Sun of Flowers”: “The way/ You look/ At me/ Makes me/ Lonely/ Grinding tears/ Behind a mask/ Made of/ Abalone.” The absence of music invites the reader to concentrate on the words themselves, bringing the meaning and message of them to the forefront of his work. Colin Meloy The Decemberists frontman Colin Meloy has joined the list of musicians who have written children’s books (including Jimmy Buffett, Paul McCartney and Madonna, with the latter publishing a coffee table book called Sex). Illustrated by his wife (and Decemberists album artist) Carson Ellis Meloy, Wildwood was released last summer. The same darkly dangerous yet excitingly adventurous spirit in many of Meloy’s songs is reshaped into a child-sized story about a girl who must rescue her brother from a murder of magical crows in the “Impassable Wilderness,” an enchanted park in Portland. Laika Films, the Portland animation studio that produced “Coraline,” will transform the book into a stop-motion feature.

Smashing Pumpkins Find a New Bassist

By 6

Once again Bully Corgan is in the news for personnel changes in his current incarnation of the Smashing Pumpkins. This time it’s concerning his newest female bassist. Whether it’s simply his preference, or the need for a female backup vocalist, or maybe it’s just because everyone loves to look at a hot girl playing bass, the newest Pumpkin is Nicole Fiorentino. Announced in the past couple days, Fiorentino has joined Corgan in the studio, and will be joining the band on the road in the coming months. This report comes from the bassist’s myspace page. The new member replaces Ginger Pooley, who left the Pumpkins in March. Fiorentino succeeds original member D'arcy and her replacement Melissa Auf der Maur. She will be playing with the current line up of guitarist Jeff Schroeder and drummer Mike Byrne. The new member does have a long musical history. She played with Brody Dalle's Spinnerette, Louise Post's incarnation of Veruca Salt, and also spent time in bands like Twilight Sleep, Radio Vago and Light FM. Keep an eye on www.smashingpumpkins.com for tour dates and any other random stuff Corgan decides to allow the world to know.

Billy Corgan Rips Into Courtney Love On Twitter

By 6

Billy Corgan took to Twitter yesterday after what seems to be the last straw in his “relationship” with Courtney Love. These tweets came before Love was on the Howard Stern show yesterday morning, where she spent a lot of the time complaining about some guy that refused to visit her at an airport during a layover. She mentioned to Stern that she had known this guy for 20 years and “may or may not be in love with him.” Love then went on to admit a veracious crack habit for the last several years, as well as several other diatribes that leads listeners to believe she’s speaking of Corgan. Besides the fact that a layover in Chicago in traveling from NYC to LA would make sense, the pair have been very public in their dissatisfaction with each other, though Love took to Facebook a few weeks back and apologized to Corgan for several of her transgressions. Then later in the day, these tweets showed up on Corgan’s account, hopefully you can read Tweetspeak: First Tweet: my face is my face, my heart is my heart, my money is my money. Oh, and my songs are MY songs+If you can’t write your own songs? Second Tweet: if you can’t write your own songs maybe you should just be happy that you fooled someone into doing your work for you..] Third Tweet: maybe you should go someone nice+live off your husband’s money, u know the money he made for writing all those great songs. Fourth Tweet: when you issue someone an apology on YOUR facebook page you might actually mean it and take responsibility for it. But… Fifth Tweet: the world is aware of your lack of responsibility, as seen in the gov’t taking away your parental right. Only you could abandon! Sixth Tweet: Only u could abandon such a beautiful, incredible child who is smarter than u, cooler than u, and better than u. Oops, did I say too much? Seventh Tweet: so have your moment, burn up in the sun that laughs at u as equally as it appears to celebrate u+sleep knowing u have no honor. Ouch... Add this to Love’s new request to no longer go by Courtney Love, instead renaming herself with her original name (Courtney Michelle Harrison), and it’s been a nice week of insanity for grunge stars.
